Coding Opportunities
Do you like technology? Would you like to learn more about technology and how to use it? Coding is one way to do that. Coding is a way of writing "instructions" for computers and other devices and telling them what to do.
Here are some opportunities to learn more about coding:
1. The McWane Center has a monthly free event called "Super Code Sunday" for kids ages 9-17. It's free to attend, but pre-registration is required. Register here. This article explains more about the club and reports about the first meeting that was held in February 2016.
2. Code.org is a great website to help you explore the world of coding and computer science. You may have participated in the "Hour of Code" at school last year using this website.
3. Khan Academy also has lots of lessons on coding and computer science. Ask your teacher for more details.

U.N. Conference
As the culmination of our prejudice unit, the 5th grade enrichment students hosted a "United Nations Student Conference" for their fellow 5th graders and their parents. They shared about various events in history and what we could learn from them, and they also offered suggestions for how we can help to end prejudice in the future. I'm so proud of all their hard work and growth during this semester-long unit!
Architecture Skype Session
Earlier in the fall, the fifth graders read The Wright 3 by Blue Balliett and learned about Frank Lloyd Wright's famous building, the Robie House. We recently had the opportunity to Skype with Don Kalec, a professor emeritus at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an expert on Frank Lloyd Wright and historical preservation. We loved having the opportunity to learn more about architecture and ask lots of questions about Frank Lloyd Wright.
Six Thinking Hats
In enrichment, we learn different thinking strategies that help us examine problems and situations from various perspectives. One of these thinking strategies is called "Six Thinking Hats" (developed by Edward de Bono). The third graders recently learned about the "Six Thinking Hats" and practiced using the thinking strategy.
